The chilly weather did not stop hundreds of people from breaking out their fishing rods on Friday.
"It’s 600 acres out here. The lake itself is a 30-acre lake. It is a little mini state park, is what I like to call it," said Tony Michalski, Director of Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission.
Curtisville Lake is home to an annual tradition for Marion County. Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) hosts the family fishing day each Good Friday, and MCPARC Director Tony Michalski said this year about 600 people showed up ready to fish.
"The big attraction of course is the stock truck comes out and stocks right in front of the kids, shows them the stocking process, it's educational and it's also fun," Michalski said.
Within the last five years, new trail systems, campgrounds and a playground added to the attractions.
MCPARC hopes more people will get out to Curtisville to explore nature.
"We’re about ten miles from Mannington, so there's not a lot going on out here, so when we have a big event, people really show up and support it and the community really gets behind it," Michalski said.
It is a toss up whether it is the kids or adults who enjoy themselves more.
"It’s a lot of fun because you can win prizes and catch a lot of fish," said Tara Ashley, fishing day participant.
"I like, you put a lot of hard work into it and then it pays off because you get to eat the fish," said participant Riley Hardesty.
Everyone agreed reeling the trout in is the best part.
When asked how many fish he would catch, participant Cameron Mercer said, “Six! I catch a lot of fish here.”
Owen Hardesty agreed, and said “I think I’m going to catch six.”
Maddox Sanson had bigger goals. “I think twelve,” he said.
MCPARC considered Family Fishing Day to be the kickoff event for seasonal activities, one that the community cannot miss.
"They do, in droves, come out and fish and enjoy what we have and then hopefully they'll come back again and come back again so that's what it's all about," Michalski said.
Door prizes, food and games were also part of Family Fishing Day.
