For months, teams with the Relay For Life of Marion County have been preparing and raising money for the event.
This Friday, those teams and cancer survivors will get to show off just how far they’ve come with the annual Relay For Life event in Marion County, hosted by the American Cancer Society.
Ryann Moore, community manager for the American Cancer Society, said they are shaking things up this year with the event.
This year’s event will be on Friday, June 5 at East Marion Park in Fairmont. Moore said the event schedule will be the same, just a different location.
That schedule starts with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m., followed by the survivor’s lap and the luminaria ceremony. A survivor’s dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Pavilion One. The event will wrap up at midnight.
What’s different this year is that the Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) will be holding a pool party for the participants from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
“Participants and visitors can swim, and there’s also putt-putt golf available,” Moore said. “Those are both the additions to the event this year.”
Moore said the band Jenna Won’t Sing will also be performing at the event.
Having the event at East Marion Park, Moore said it will bring the 29 teams registered so far closer together.
“That’s why we made the change in location,” she said.
Last year’s Relay For Life raised about $97,000. Moore said that’s around the average amount that it has raised during these events.
Moore said the event is ultimately a fundraising event for the American Cancer, but she said it’s also to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer.
“Celebrate those who beat the disease; remember those who haven’t been so fortunate,” Moore said.
She added that participants will fight back against cancer with the closing ceremonies and remember why they are there and who they’re representing.
“The whole night is about fighting back against cancer and raising money to find a cure,” Moore said.
