BMX is a fast, action-packed sport that is usually run by volunteer parents.  Age classes are one year apart, beginning with the 5 year old and under class and continuing up to the 17 and older classes.  The website for the National Bicycle League is WWW.NBL.org.
BMX races are run on closed courses that are irregular, with both right and left turns.  The courses feature a number of obstacles.  Obstacles may include turns, jumps, rollers, doubles, tabletops and stepups that challenge the riders' skills.  Layouts vary from track to track, yet all must meet certain NBL standards.  NBL tracks should be at least 500 feet long and generally are not longer than 1,100 feet.  Most are made completely of dirt, while some have concrete berms.  No two NBL tracks are exactly the same, so you will want to test your skills on as many of them as you can.
